For over two hundred years, Ordnance Survey (OS) has been mapping the world, making it easier for us to find our way around without worrying about getting lost. With this lengthy experience, it is not surprising that so many people choose OS maps to get them to their destinations in one piece. Here are a few of the more common varieties used for leisure:
Tour (1:100,000 scale): Covering a county-sized area, these maps contain sightseeing information, footpaths and roads.
OS Landranger (1:50,000 scale): A general purpose map covering all major footpaths and roads.
OS Landranger Active: A laminated form of the Landranger series of OS maps.
OS Explorer and Outdoor Leisure (1:25,000 scale): A highly detailed map designed for walkers and cyclists.
OS Explorer Active: A laminated form of the OS Explorer map.
Ordnance Survey also produced a range of maps designed specifically for road users. These were discontinued in January 2010, but may still be found either online or in your local map store. Regardless of which OS maps you purchase though, they will still be a valuable tool while out exploring the world.
